Indian captain Rohit Sharma has had a successful stint as a skipper in the Indian Premier League and has won five titles for the Mumbai Indians. Rohit has also led India to the T20 World Cup semi-final and the finals of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup, but his hunt for an ICC trophy is still on. Despite a successful captaincy career in the IPL, Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the captain of the Mumbai Indians.
Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 auction for a whopping price of INR 15 crore from Gujarat Titans. Later, Pandya was named as the skipper of MI. Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh while speaking to media, termed Rohit Sharma as a great captain and hailed the right-handed opener.
Yuvraj Singh was also asked about the appointment of Hardik Pandya as the captain of India in the T20 World Cup 2024. Yuvraj stated that this is dependent on the fitness of Hardik and this is the call of the selectors. During the interaction, Yuvraj was also asked about the clash of egos between the two players.
Replying to the question, Yuvraj said that when two players play together these things happen, and if there is any issue both players shall sit together and talk about it. Yuvraj further considered Rohit Sharma as very instrumental and stated that he has always tried to take the best out of Hardik Pandya.
They both are professionals – Yuvraj Singh on Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya
Yuvraj Singh said (as quoted by PTI), “I can say Rohit has been a great captain, he’s got five IPL trophies, he took us to the (World Cup) final. He has been one of our great captains of IPL and India. We have to manage his workload. I don’t know what’s the situation with Hardik’s fitness at the moment. That is the selectors’ call.”
“When players play together these things happen. If they have an issue they should definitely sit and talk about it. Rohit has always been very instrumental in getting the best out of Hardik whenever he has played for Mumbai Indians, especially in terms of his bowling to manage his workload. Hardik has always been always good with the bat at death. Batting at 4 for Gujarat, he batted like a batter. They should definitely talk about it. I don’t see an issue there.”
“Whenever you are playing for your country, your priority is to put everything aside and give your 100 percent in the park. They both are professionals, if they have any issue they will put it aside and give 100 percent for the country.”
Rohit Sharma along with batsman Virat Kohli stayed away from the T20Is after India’s disappointing loss against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final. Since then Hardik Pandya led Team India in the shortest international format and produced promising results.
There were speculations that if Rohit Sharma did not play in the T20 World Cup 2024, Hardik Pandya would be leading India. However, Hardik’s injury in the ODI World Cup 2023 and Rohit’s return to T20I cricket against Afghanistan are the answers to all the false speculations.
The T20 World Cup 2024 will start in June whereas India will play their opening match against Ireland on June 5.
