In what has been the latest development as per the reports in ESPNCricinfo, it is learned that Ben Stokes will miss the clash against Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023. The match between the two teams will take place on 10th October (Tuesday) in Dharamsala.
Ben Stokes has been nursing a sore left hip, which was the reason why he missed the first game against New Zealand, which England lost by 9 wickets. The all-rounder is still 100% fit and therefore he’s expected to miss the clash against Bangladesh.
Although Ben Stokes is likely to miss the game against Bangladesh, he was seen in the nets in Dharamsala. The all-rounder was seen moving freely when he faced spinners and it is expected that he will be fit for England’s clash against Afghanistan, slated to take place on Sunday in Delhi.
Captain Jos Buttler also mentioned that Ben Stokes is likely to miss the game against Bangladesh. He admitted that the all-rounder is progressing well and is gaining fitness. Speaking to BBC, he explained:
“Progressing well. He is doing more and more each day and seems to be improving, so it is good sign. It’s good to see him back in the nets and building back towards full fitness, but he’s probably unlikely for tomorrow.”
In place of Ben Stokes, Harry Brook started the first game. The right-hander played a blistering cameo as he smashed 25 runs in 15 balls but couldn’t convert the start he got. Stokes recently took back his retirement for the World Cup and was in staggering form in the series against New Zealand at home.
ENG vs BAN: Ben Stokes to miss the game; Reece Topley likely to play against Bangladesh
Apart from the possibility of Ben Stokes missing the game, it is also likely that England would bring in Reece Topley in the XI, considering the conditions in Dharamsala. The fast bowler is expected to replace Moeen Ali.
Jos Buttler while talking about the conditions in Dharamsala pointed out that they will be having a discussion of including an extra pacer in the team. He added:
“It’s definitely an option. I played here in the IPL just gone, and there can be some good pace and bounce in the wicket. So certainly, we’ll have those discussions and we’ve got fantastic options within the squad to pick different line-ups with a different balance. It’s something we’ll consider.”
England suffered a massive 9-wicket loss against New Zealand, which also hampered their NRR. They would be looking to make a strong comeback in the second game.
