This is India’s fourth ODI against Afghanistan. Both teams have played three to date with India winning two and one ending in a draw.
India won their first game against Australia in Chennai on Sunday. From being 3/2 a 165-run stand between Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) took the team to victory after the early jitters. The top-order Indian batters including skipper Rohit Sharma were dismissed for ducks.
The Indian innings was then brought to the shore by Kohli and Rahul. Once again in an ICC event, the Indian top-order has failed to give them a good start. The same problem existed in the last World Cup as well and seems to be a major area of concern in this ICC event as well.
However, the depth in the Indian batting came to the fore in the match against Australia. Kohli also exemplified how one should play under pressure with KL Rahul happy to play the second fiddle. He has been India’s best batter in the middle order and has scored runs in the toughest of situations since the Asia Cup.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has confirmed that Shubman Gill will not play the match against Afghanistan as he continues to recover from his illness. This means that Ishan Kishan gets another opportunity at the top of the order which he must capitalize.
As far as the Indian bowling is concerned, they should play with the same attack keeping their three spinners intact in Delhi which is known to be a venue that aids the spinners. Ideally, India should play with the same XI against Afghanistan after their emphatic win over Australia.

Rohit will open the batting and also lead the side. He was out for a duck against Australia and now has the opportunity to score big against Afghanistan. He should take his time at the start.
