The left-arm spinner hunted 5 wickets to demolish Netherlands’ batting in the match. He dismissed Max ODowd, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards, Roelof van der Merwe, and Ryan Klein. He picked 5 wickets for 59 overs in his 10-over spell.
Mitchell Santner Becomes Only Kiwi Spinner With Fifer In World Cups
With his five-wicket haul against New Zealand, Santner has become the only Kiwi spinner to get a fifer in ODI World Cup tournaments. A total of six New Zealand bowlers have got a five-wicket haul in the World Cup. Tim Southee, Shane Bond, Trent Boult, RJ Hadlee, and James Neesham are the five other bowlers who have clinched this feat.
Mitchell Santner also scored a quickfire knock of 37 runs off 17 balls while batting. With his brilliant show, the all-rounder also won the Player of the Match award in the match. During the post-match presentation, he credited the batters to set up a mammoth total while batting.
“Not too bad, credit to the boys upfront with the bat, they gave us a nice platform. There was a bit of a hole in the middle but we did well to get past 320. It skidded a bit under lights but we contained them and bowled well,” said Santner.
New Zealand Defeat Netherlands By 99 Runs
Talking about the match, New Zealand batted first and posted a gigantic total of 322-7 on the scoreboard. Will Young (70), Rachin Ravindra (51), and Tom Latham (53) shattered half-centuries for the team.
Later, Colin Ackerman scored 69 runs for the Netherlands. However, they were bowled out for just 223, losing the match by 99 runs. Other than Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry also gave an incredible bowling show picking 3 wickets.
New Zealand will now take on Bangladesh in their next encounter. The match takes place on October 13 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
