IND Vs AFG: Sunil Gavaskar Slams Rohit Sharma’s Footwork In ODI World Cup Opener

Renowned Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar analyzed the dismissal of Rohit Sharma and the subsequent batting collapse, which led India to an unfortunate milestone at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

In an unprecedented occurrence in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket, three of India’s top four batsmen failed to register a single run during their match against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The trio of skipper Rohit Sharma, opener Ishan Kishan, and key batter Shreyas Iyer all faced early departures without scoring a run.

Before this World Cup, Rohit Sharma had displayed his brilliance in the final ODI appearance against Australia, where he blazed a remarkable 81 off just 57 deliveries in the third game of a three-match series.

Rohit, who had been the top run-scorer in the 2019 edition of the ICC World Cup, was expected to continue his prolific form into India’s World Cup campaign. However, his journey was cut short by the pace of Josh Hazlewood, who also claimed the wicket of Shreyas Iyer in a low-scoring contest at Chepauk.

This Might Be Rohit Sharma’s Last World Cup

Discussing Rohit’s disappointing performance against Australia, Gavaskar noted that the Indian skipper commenced his ODI World Cup journey with a duck. The cricketing legend observed that the 2023 ICC event might mark Rohit’s farewell to the ODI World Cup.

“In the last tournament in 2019, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, hit five centuries and a few half-centuries too. This time around, which could well be his last World Cup, he has begun with a zero in the first game. The footwork is palpably slow to start with, and that makes him vulnerable to the incoming delivery. If he can rediscover the 2019 form, then India will be assured of a very good start to their campaign,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

Superstar Rohit Sharma will be eager to bounce back in India’s upcoming match against Afghanistan, which will take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. In their opening fixture, Rohit’s India triumphed over Australia, while Hashmatullah Shahidi and his team started their World Cup journey with a loss to Bangladesh in Dharamsala.

“The so-called minnows, Afghanistan and the Netherlands, have started with defeats as also Sri Lanka who had to qualify for the tournament. It’s going to be a long haul for all the teams, and no one can be termed as favorites after they have played their first match. That’s why this tournament could well be the most exciting of them all,” Gavaskar added.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been hospitalized due to a drop in his platelet counts. If he is not fit then India might have to go with the Ishan-Rohit opening pair even against Pakistan. Hopefully, Shubman Gill will be fit to play in the latter half of the tournament.
