As the sun cast its warm glow over Bengaluru, the Indian cricket team engaged in a practice session that reverberated with energy and anticipation. Their last league-stage match in the World Cup, against the Netherlands, scheduled for November 12, is approaching. And the Men in Blue are leaving no stone unturned in their preparation.

Ishan Kishan started proceedings by taking throw-downs. At the adjacent net, Shubman Gill faced Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and the local bowlers. Initially, Bumrah and Krishna tested Gill with their penetrating line and length. However, Gill quickly adapted to the conditions and the swing generated by the bowlers.

Gill’s confidence was palpable as he dispatched the net bowlers into the stands with ease, a testament to his newfound status as the No 1 ranked ODI batter.

Local boy Krishna, the latest entrant into the squad as a replacement for Hardik Pandya, engaged in discussions with bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. They discussed line and length, exploring different angles and strategies to outfox the opposition. Krishna is likely to make his World Cup debut against the Dutch side. The Indian team is set to rest either Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj.

Shreyas Iyer, replacing Kishan at the nets, wasted no time in asserting his dominance. He launched towering sixes that landed in the stands. Facing a couple of local bowlers other than Shardul Thakur and Siraj, Iyer’s aggressive approach mirrored his aspirations for the upcoming match.

Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja then swapped nets, but Iyer’s onslaught continued. His bat seemed to have a magnet for the throw-down specialists, as he confidently met each delivery with ferocity. When he eventually returned to the dressing room, he waved his bat as if he had just scored a century, perhaps visualizing the grandeur of what is awaiting him on match day.

Another local boy, KL Rahul, engaged in an intriguing battle with Krishna. The pacer’s testing line and length challenged Rahul, but he remained undeterred, dispatching the bowlers for massive sixes. Krishna was fierce with his pace and bounce and troubled the batters regularly.

Gill was back after a short break. This time, he took on the local spinners and showcased his prowess with straight bat strokes. The boundary ropes continued to tremble under the impact of his shots.

Amid all this, captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid had a good look at the pitch and engaged in a lengthy discussion with the curator.

Post-nets, Rohit, Iyer and Gill engaged in an animated discussion about facing short balls and shot selection. What was initially a serious conversation, quickly dissolved into laughter, reflecting the camaraderie and unity within the team.

While Rohit was present at the practice session, he chose not to bat. The likes of Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami decided to skip the session.
