AUS vs PAK: David Warner Takes A Massive Jibe At Umpiring Standards In ICC World Cup 2023

Australian opener David Warner expressed a wish for umpires’ statistics to be displayed on the scoreboard screen, similar to players’ stats. David Warner said that it would benefit spectators and players to understand umpires’ tendencies and decisions on close calls.

David Warner expressed his frustration following his LBW dismissal against Sri Lanka during the ICC World Cup. The southpaw showed his discontent after being given out by on-field umpire Joel Wilson. He left the field, thumping his bat on his pad and shouting something.

There’s No Bias In Any Thing – David Warner

Reflecting on his dismissal in Lucknow, David Warner emphasized the need for accountability and open communication between players and umpires.

“Players’ stats go up on the board as you walk out to bat. When they announce the umpires, I’d love to see their stats come up on the board as well. The NRL does it. I think the NFL does it. It’s a great thing for the spectators to see as well. You definitely know which umpires are going to give those 50-50 ones when it hits the pad, and that’s where from my perspective it gets frustrating.”

“There’s no bias in anything. It’s just that you feel that as a player sometimes. There has to be some accountability. If you get a decision wrong, just accept it and apologise. Players aren’t going to bite your head off. Umpires aren’t going to bite your head off if you ask them the question. They’re generally pretty honest,” said Warner, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald.

David Warner scored 11 runs off 6 deliveries before being dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka. The left-handed batter got hit under the knee roll near the line of the leg stump. The DRS showed that the ball was just clipping the leg stump.

Pretty Much Going Down Leg – David Warner

David Warner thought the ball was heading down the leg side and expressed his surprise at being given out. The veteran opener said that he was disappointed with umpire Joel Wilson’s response regarding his dismissal.

“Normally when something hits me on the leg on the outside, I know it’s pretty much going down leg. I asked Joel when I was out there … ‘why did he give it out?’ He said the ball was swinging back. From my perspective on the replay, it wasn’t. When you see on the replay how it unfolded, you get a little bit annoyed,” Warner said

However, the 36-year-old batter’s dismissal didn’t cost Australia, as they chased down the target by five wickets. The Pat Cummins-led team will lock horns with Pakistan in their next game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 20.
