The fifth Ashes 2023 Test played between England and Australia was the last of veteran English pacer Stuart Broad’s international career. Broad picked up a total of 604 wickets in the 167 Test matches he played and won a lot of games for the Three Lions. However, Broad’s retirement from international cricket shocked his fans as it came in the middle of the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia in London.
While speaking to Sky Sports in a recent interview, Stuart Broad revealed that he could have played international cricket for two more years. However, Broad further stated that he wanted to finish at the top and in the England shirt due to which he took the step.
Stuart Broad opens up on his international retirement
Stuart Broad said to Sky Sports, “I do feel within myself that I could have played for another couple of years but I wanted to finish at the top, finish in an England shirt and to be able to control that myself. I had to try and go at the right time.”
“I have had no regrets yet which I think tells me in my gut that it was the right decision. Because my teammates have not walked onto the field in their whites with the England cap on, I have not had a moment of realisation like, ‘wow, I won’t ever do that again’.”
“Every player I have spoken to, from different eras, has had that one moment of ‘I am not a professional cricketer any more’. Whether that comes when England go to India or when Nottinghamshire take the field in April at Trent Bridge, I’m not sure, [but] I couldn’t have finished in a better way.”
Stuart Broad had a legendary career for the English cricket team and was the witness of many famous wins for the country. However, Broad was the bowler who was hit for six sixes in an over by Indian batter Yuvraj Singh during the 2007 T20 World Cup.
At this point, any bowler would have not been able to come back from such an incident, but it was Broad who came up strong after the incident and turned out to be one of the best pacers in the history of international cricket.
Stuart Broad also had a brilliant partnership with his fellow bowler James Anderson and has taken over 1000 Test wickets with him. However, Broad made his debut after Anderson, but Anderson is still playing whereas Stuart Broad has retired.
Getting back to England, they will be touring India in January 2024 and it will once again be a Test for the English team to counter the Indian challenge and come out at the top. However, it has not been a pleasing experience for England in the last few Test series in India.
England lost to India by a margin of 4-0 and 3-1 in the last tours to India and with Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes coming to India as the head coach and captain, the English team might look to change fortunes in India and repeat the 2012 heroics.
