Glenn Maxwell Doubtful For Bangladesh Game In World Cup 2023

Australia are yet to take a final call on Glenn Maxwell‘s availability for their final league game in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The five-time world champions have already booked their place in the semifinals and will take on Bangladesh in their last league game on Saturday (November 11).

The right-handed batsman battled through a back injury and severe cramps to achieve a historic double-century against Afghanistan earlier this week. Australia were reeling at 91 for 7 while chasing 292 before Glenn Maxwell helped them register a miraculous win at the Wankhede Stadium. He smashed an unbeaten 201 runs off just 128 balls with the help of 21 fours and 10 sixes.

Towards the end of the innings, he wasn’t even able to run and relied mainly on boundaries. And the Australian star is still feeling the impact of the full-body cramp in the hot and humid conditions of Mumbai. While Australia trained on Friday, Glenn Maxwell decided to stay away as he continued his recovery.

Glenn Maxwell doubtful for clash:

Speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, assistant coach Daniel Vettori stated that Australia are still not clear on Glenn Maxwell’s participation in the game. The former New Zealand captain said that Australia will not take any quick call and Maxwell’s participation will depend on how he feels.

“He’s definitely been in full recovery mode the last few days. I think we all saw the effects of the innings and in particular the heat,” Vettori told reporters on Friday.

“Today’s a big day to see how he pulls up. We’ll just see how he feels as the day continues on but it’s obviously been pretty hectic for him the last few days.

“It’ll be how he feels – I don’t think it’ll be a fitness-test scenario. We understand that obviously now that the semi-final is pretty definitive in Kolkata that it will be a build towards that. He does have a track record of being able to bounce back pretty quickly, even with some time away from the game,” he added.

With a place in the semifinals already booked, Australia are unlikely to take any risk with Maxwell. He has been one of their best players in the competition. He has hit 397 runs in the World Cup so far which includes a double-century and a 40-ball century.
