Shakib Al Hasan‘s slow start in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been a significant concern for Bangladesh. The all-rounder’s poor form is jeopardizing his team’s chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Once the top-ranked all-rounder in ICC rankings, Shakib has recently slipped to No. 5, a troubling sign for Bangladesh.
Shakib Al Hasan’s struggle in T20 World Cup 2024
Despite being one of the leading wicket-takers in T20Is, Shakib went wicketless against Sri Lanka, South Africa and Netherlands in the group stage of T20 WC 2024. Although the pitches in New York had been favourable to bowlers, he failed to capitalize on the conditions.
Shakib has also struggled with the bat, scoring only 111 runs in 6 innings.
His performance against India in the Super 8 match was equally disappointing. Walking in to bat at No. 5 while chasing a daunting total of 196, Shakib managed only 11 off seven balls before being dismissed by wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the 13th over. This failure further compounded Bangladesh’s troubles, despite a fighting knock of 40 from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and a quickfire 24 off 10 balls from Rishad Hossain, which took Bangladesh total to 146/8 in 20 overs.

Virender Sehwag criticizes underfire Shakib
Indian cricket legend Virender Sehwag did not hold back in his criticism of Shakib. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag questioned Shakib’s commitment and decision-making during his innings.
“When you have a set batter with you at the crease, at least support him. Spend some time in the middle and try to get something out of the match. Instead, only 11 runs were scored off seven deliveries before he walked back. I did not understand that,” Sehwag remarked.
“He has so much experience. So, is he not making the most of it, or does he simply not care? Was he thinking that the target is too big, and after hitting a six, he would continue scoring sixes off every ball? That’s why I said earlier, he needs to make way for a younger player now,” the former Indian opener added.
As Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup campaign hangs in the balance, Shakib’s form remains a critical factor. His experience and skills are vital to the team’s success, but his recent performances have left much to be desired. Bangladesh will need Shakib to rediscover his form quickly if they are to make a serious run in the remaining tournament.
