IND vs AFG: Shubman Gill To Miss Second Game Against Afghanistan, Confirms BCCI; Provides Medical Update On Batter

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have provided a medical update on young batter Shubman Gill. The governing body confirmed that the opener will miss India’s clash against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. The match is slated to take place on Wednesday (11th October) in Delhi.

BCCI also confirmed that Shubman Gill hasn’t travelled with the Indian team to Delhi for the Afghanistan clash. They revealed that the batter will stay in Chennai and will be monitored by the medical team. The batter is expected to be fit for India’s third game against Pakistan in ICC World Cup 2023.

Releasing the official statement, BCCI stated: “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October.

“He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

Shubman Gill ahead of India’s opening clash against Australia tested positive for dengue. He has not been keeping well and was ruled out of the clash against five-time champions.

In his place, Ishan Kishan was given the nod ahead in the game against Australia. The keeper-batter didn’t have a great outing as he was back in the hut for a golden duck. Apart from Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer also bagged ducks.

But Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) batted magnificently well and chased the target of 200 runs to help India register their first win of the tournament. With the ball, Indian spinners were on top as they picked 6 wickets between them and bundled out Australia for a low total.

Farveez Maharoof Says Shubman Gill Will Be Player To Watch Out In The ICC World Cup 2023

Former Indian cricketer Farveez Maharoof recently heaped rich praise on Shubman Gill and said that he will be a player to watch out for. He believes that it’ll be a great opportunity for a young player like him as he has been doing well for the last few years.

Speaking to ANI, he explained: “It is going to be a very interesting World Cup. It’s going to be very competitive. Some teams are in really good forms and good combinations. Every country has their own star. Shubman Gill has been scoring a lot of runs.

“It will be a perfect opportunity for a young player like him who has been doing really well for India for the past two to three years.”

Shubman Gill has been India’s best batter in the ODIs this year. The right-hander has been in the red hot form and is currently the leading run-getter in the format this year. His absence against Australia was evident as India didn’t have a good start.
