IND vs AFG: ‘Tilak Varma Can Be A Multi-Format Player’ – Ex-India Selector

Former wicketkeeper batter Saba Karim believes that young batter Tilak Varma will play a crucial role for India in white-ball cricket. Saba Karim emphasized that Tilak Varma aligns with the strategic vision of skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

Tilak Varma has been included in India’s 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The southpaw might feature in India’s playing XI during the series opener in the absence of Virat Kohli, who is unavailable due to personal reasons.

The first match of the upcoming series will be played at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Thursday, January 11. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma will lead the national team in the T20 format after making a comeback in the shorter format of the game.

Tilak Varma Is Capable Of Playing An Integral Role In White-Ball Cricket – Saba Karim

In a Sports 18 discussion, Saba Karim emphasized the significance of Tilak Varma in the Indian team. Karim highlighted Rahul Dravid’s strategic emphasis on investing in left-handers as a crucial element for enhancing team dynamics.

“I think he is capable of playing an integral role for this Indian side in white-ball cricket. That’s the vision of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid. They need to bring in youngsters, especially left-handers,” Karim said.

“It really adds depth and offers more variations to the Indian side. It actually provides a lot of headaches to the opposition. So that is one reason why Rahul Dravid has insisted on investing in such left-handers,” he added.

Tilak Varma made his T20I debut during the West Indies tour last year. The 21-year-old batter amassed 310 runs at an impressive strike rate of 141.55 in 14 T20Is. However, he struggled in the ODI format, scoring 68 runs in four matches with an average of 22.67.

Tilak Varma Is Capable Of Doing That – Saba Karim

Saba Karim mentioned that Tilak Varma’s ability to bowl part-time off-spin adds flexibility to India’s bowling options. Karim emphasized the potential for Varma to become a multi-format cricketer, highlighting his impressive technique and demonstrated skills.

“On top of that, his ability to bowl right-arm off-spin. You need somebody in the Indian lineup from No. 1 to No. 6 who can also roll his arm over and double up as a sixth bowler whenever it is required, and Tilak Varma is capable of doing that,” Karim further added.

“I am really eager to see Tilak Varma’s progress in international cricket. I reckon that in years to come, he can be a multi-format player for India, with the kind of technique he has and the skills he has shown,” he concluded.

Tilak Varma is poised to face heightened competition with the anticipated return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the squad. The comeback of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya would intensify the fierce competition for middle-order positions in the team.
