India National Cricket Team premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood in the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, October 11, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Winning the toss and batting first in the match, Afghanistan openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz were off to a good start in the match. They were cautious against Bumrah but took Mohammed Siraj to the cleaners.
The 32-run partnership between the openers was finally broken by the premier pacer Bumrah on the fourth ball of the 7th over. Bumrah bowled a 135kmph back-of-a-length delivery around off-stump and it shaped away a little bit.
Ibrahim Zadran tried to defend it but he got an outside edge that went towards wicket-keeper KL Rahul, who completed a good catch behind stumps. What caught the attention of many was the celebration pulled off by Jasprit Bumrah after picking the first wicket of the match.
He pointed to his temple, showing off his brains. It is the trademark celebration of the English professional footballer Marcus Rashford, who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and the England national team.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran was dismissed after scoring 22 runs off 28 balls, with 4 fours.
Need to bowl well and need to come back and bat better – Rohit Sharma
During the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma said that they need to bowl well in the match and then perform well with the bat. He was also hopeful of maintaining the winning momentum in the World Cup. Rohit Sharma said:
“We were looking to bat second. We saw the amount of dew last evening. Don’t think the wicket will change much. Need to bowl well and need to come back and bat better.
“We were under pressure (against Australia) to start with, but KL and Kohli batted well, they were magnificent and we take a lot of pride in our performance. It was a good game for us, hopefully, we can repeat that and keep the momentum going forward. Ashwin misses out, Shardul Thakur comes in for him.“
