In the wake of India’s humiliating defeat against South Africa in the first Test, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has taken a sly dig at them, saying that the Indian team ‘doesn’t win anything’.
South Africa completely outplayed India and won the Test in three days. The hosts inflicted a crushing defeat on the visitors to take an unassailable lead in the two-match series. Asked to bat first, India were reeling at 121 for 6 in their first innings before a century from KL Rahul propelled them to 245. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada picked up 5 wickets.
In reply, the Proteas rode on their veteran opener Dean Elgar’s brilliant knock of 185 runs to post a big total of 408 runs. Debutant David Bedingham (56) and Marco Jansen (84*) also played crucial knocks for the home side.
Trailing by 163 runs, India came up with another poor display with the bat in the second innings. While Virat Kohli played a valiant knock of 76 runs, he found little support from the other end and India were eventually bowled out for just 131 runs inside 35 overs. Kohli and Shubman Gill (26) were the only India batters into double figures.
Michael Vaughan slams India:
With India suffering yet another heavy loss in Tests in South Africa, Michael Vaughan has called them the most underachieving team in the world. The former England batter stated that the team has failed to justify the talent and resources at its disposal by failing to win any major honors in recent years.
“Here’s a question for you – India, in terms of cricket, are they one of the most under-achieving sports team in the world?” Michael Vaughan said on Fox Cricket during the Australia-Pakistan Test series.
“With all the talent that they have… I think they are, yeah. Well, they don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skillsets… they won here (Australia) twice, magnificent but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, T20 World Cups, nowhere.
“You go so South Africa, who are, you know, useful in Test match cricket and to produce a performance like that… I mean, with all the talent they have, and the resources they have, I don’t think they win anything,” he added.
One of the hosts of the show quickly reminded Michael Vaughan about India’s dominant run in the World Cup before the loss in the final. In reply, the Ashes-winning former captain hit back by saying that India could not win that tournament either.
