South Africa were bowled out for just 55 on the opening day of the second Test well inside lunch in the first session of play. Mohammed Siraj triggered a collapse in the South African batting lineup taking 6/15, his maiden six-fer in Test cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar picked up two wickets each as South Africa were bowled out for their lowest total since their readmission into international cricket since 1932. It is South Africa’s lowest total in Test cricket since 1932 and their readmission, and the worst ever by any team against India.
62 by New Zealand in 2021 and 79 posted by South Africa themselves back in 2015 are the other two lowest totals against India in Test matches. Before this, SA’s five lowest totals ever were 30, 30, 35, 36, and 43 – but they came way back in the late 1800s or the early 1900s.
South Africa Bowled Out For 55 Against India, Their Lowest Against Men In Blue
This is also the third-lowest total in Test matches in Cape Town. The lowest is by New Zealand (45) in 2013 and the second-lowest by Zimbabwe (54) in 2005. As many as nine batters were dismissed or single-digit scores with Marco Jansen falling for a duck. South African skipper Dean Elgar in the first innings of his final Test match scored just 4. Kyle Verreynne top-scored for the Proteas with 15 off 30 balls.
Mohammed Siraj who took fifers against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final and the ODI World Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka inflicted a six-fer against the South African batting lineup. This was his maiden six-fer in Test cricket. Elgar was the key wicket to fall in the South Africa innings in the sixth over. His wicket opened up the floodgates for India.

Interestingly, Cape Town has remained witness seven times when teams have been bowled out for 55 or less in Test cricket. Lord’s is the next venue where six times teams have been dismissed for 55 or less.
In terms of records, this was also the 11th shortest completed innings in Test cricket as India took a total of 23.1 overs to bowl out South Africa. India are yet to win a Test series on South African soil. They lost the first Test and hence lost another opportunity to win a Test series in South Africa.
Heading into the second Test, Elgar said that a Test series win against India is similar to a World Cup win for him.
“I only play the game to win. I don’t care about stats. I care about wins. I care about series wins. That’s the greatest memories you can ever share with your team, everyone that has got an influential role in the background. Test series wins – you don’t top that. Maybe a World Cup win is up there. I have never had that opportunity but this is my World Cup. This is my arena where I want to win” Elgar said on the eve of his final Test.
He also said that he takes great pride in leading his team in his final Test match in the absence of Temba bavuma who was ruled out of the second Test with an injury. It was under his leadership that South Africa won 2-1 against India in 2021. He now has another chance to win another Test series against India.
“I don’t think you get a bigger accolade or bigger credit than to be asked to captain. I did it in the past for a year-and-a-half or whatever it was and it has been the best learning experience for me as an individual – not just from a cricketing point of view but off-field stuff. I give my 100% whether I am playing or captaining and I am going to have that mentality going into this game.” said Elgar.
