IND-W vs AUS-W: Deepti Sharma Joins Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Shami In Elite List

Indian women cricketer Deepti Sharma achieved a massive feat in the history of one-day cricket for India. The all-rounder became only the eighth Indian to pick a fifer against Australia in 50-over cricket, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Shami and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Deepti Sharma achieved the feat in the recently concluded second WODI against Australia. The second game of the series between the teams took place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Although India lost the game, the all-rounder was the shining light for the team.

India were put into the field first and it was a decent performance from then with the ball. One of the key architects behind that was none other than Deepti Sharma. The all-rounder spun the web around the Australian batters and troubled them big time.

Deepti Sharma picked five wickets in her spell and broke the backbone of the Australian team. She didn’t allow the opposition to settle and bowled sensationally well. His spell put visitors on the back foot and helped the India team charge with the ball.

Deepti Sharma returned with the figures of 5/38 in her quota of 10 overs and recorded the best bowling figures by an Indian in women’s ODIs against Australia. She surpassed Nooshin al Khadeer, who took 4/14 in 2006.

Deepti Sharma removed Ellyse Perry (50), Beth Mooney (10), Tahlia McGrath (24), Annabel Sutherland (23) and Georgia Wareham (22). Her staggering heroics with the ball saw India Women restricting Australia Women to a total of 258/8. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, however, failed to chase the target and fell short of the target by just 3 runs. They are now 2-0 down in the series.

With her five-wicket haul, Deepti Sharma joined the likes of Murali Kartik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sachin Tendulkar, and Mohammed Shami to bag a five-for against Australia in ODis.

IND-W vs AUS-W: Harmanpreet Kaur Opens up about Deepti Sharma and others dropping catches

India had a torrid day on the field. They dropped as many as seven catches with Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Yastika Bhatia, and Sneh Rana being culprits.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur opened up about the 3-run loss India women suffered in the second. She also talked about the dropped catches, saying that it’s part and parcel of the game. She explained:

“I think we bowled well today, we planned about picking wickets. Lots of positives from the game, but they took the game away from us in the end. We could have shown some more awareness. Ghosh played a good role, looking forward to the next game now. They have a very long batting line-up, so restricting them below 300 was a positive.

I think that (dropped catches) is part of a game. We have been playing in the heat and playing a lot of cricket, so we need to bounce back, that’s important.”

Deepti Sharma tried hard with the bat in the end but couldn’t take her team past the finishing line. With 16 runs needed off the last over, she kept her team in the game but couldn’t lead them to win.
