“India were pretty ordinary” – Anil Kumble tears apart Rohit Sharma & Co.

Anil Kumble labeled India National Cricket Team as “pretty ordinary” after their defeat in the first match of the five-match Test series against the England National Cricket Team.

It was a shocking defeat for India in the first Test match against England in Hyderabad. India, who had a good lead in the first innings failed to win the first Test of the five-match series. India dominated the first two days of the match and were in no condition to lose the match. However, it was batsman Ollie Pope and later bowler bowler Tom Hartley, who initiated England’s comeback in the match.

Ollie Pope, on one end, played an explicit knock of 196 runs and helped England grab a 230-run second innings lead. Pope also surpassed former Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar’s record of 188* runs against India and became the fourth individual highest run scorer by a visiting batsman against India. Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower leads the list whereas, Brendon McCullum and Sir Garfield Sobers are in the 2nd the 3rd spots.

On the other hand, debutant Tom Hartley, who was pretty ordinary in the first innings, ripped through the Indian batting lineup in the second and picked up a seven-wicket haul. Hartley picked up a total of nine wickets in the match and has left a huge statement to the whole cricketing world.

Anil Kumble slams Team India

Former Indian bowler Anil Kumble slammed India’s performance on the 3rd and 4th day of the match believing that the hosts were pretty ordinary. Anil Kumble praised England and stated that the visitors were brilliant in the last two days. India’s heads were dropped in the field on the 3rd and the 4th day, but the credit goes to England, for the way they batted and bowled.

Anil Kumble said to the broadcaster, “England were brilliant over the last two days. India were pretty ordinary. In the field, you could see that heads were dropping down while fielding. But credit to England, the way they batted, the way they came and bowled.”

“Tom Hartley, a debutant, gets hit for a six on his first ball. Then, the first five overs he was going at about seven runs an over. To come back and bat really well, take two wickets in the first innings, and seven in the second and win the match for England was absolutely fantastic. England have done exceptionally well,” the Indian legend Anil Kumble said on JioCinema’s ‘Match Centre Live’ at the end of the match.

India also added a shameful record beside their name. In the 91 years of the history of Indian cricket, this is the first time that India have lost a Test match by having a first-innings lead of over 100 runs at home. Also, this is the second time that a team has lost in India by leading by more than 100 runs in the first innings. The previous match was in 2001 when India snatched the win out of the jaws of Australia by following on by 274 runs.

India witnessed a huge slump in the World Test Championship 2023-25 rankings and they slumped down to the fifth spot. The two-time WTC finalists now will be looking to win the second Test which is slated to be played from February 2 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam.

India have a lot to think about from the first Test match and will look to work on the mistakes they made in the first Test. Indian batsmen such as Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer can lose their place and Rajat Patidar and Dhruv Jurel can be given a chance in their place for the second Test.
