Matthew Potts Replaces Josh Tongue In England Squad For West Indies ODIs

England National Cricket Team pacer Matthew Potts has been named as the replacement for  injured Josh Tongue in the 15-man ODI squad for the white-ball tour of West Indies.

The England tour of West Indies 2023 consists of a three-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series. The ODIs are set to be played on December 3, 6, and 9 while the T20Is are scheduled to be held on December 13, 15, 17, 20, and 22.

The original white-ball squads of England were announced barely 12 hours after the end of the disastrous World Cup campaign of the team. Jos Buttler faced heavy criticism for his batting as well as captaincy in the competition, but he was retained as skipper for the West Indies tour.

Also, several players from the World Cup squad have been left out for the West Indies series, with the ECB retaining only six players from the CWC 2023 squad for the upcoming white-ball series. The retained players are Jos, Buttler, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone.

Matthew Potts Replaces Josh Tongue

The emerging pacer Josh Tongue has been ruled out of the white-ball series due to an injury he sustained in the ongoing England Lions training camp in the United Arab Emirates.

He will be replaced by Matthew Potts in the squad for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies in the Caribbean. However, the ECB has named no replacement for the T20Is. Potts played his most recent ODI against Ireland at Bristol in September.

Meanwhile, the injury will serve as a major blow to Josh Tongue’s hopes of sealing his place in the white-ball side. He was highly impressive in the thrilling Ashes 2023 series in England. ECB would be hopeful of the pacer recovering quickly and returning to the setup.

England ODI squad vs West Indies: Jos Buttler (c), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Ollie Pope, Phil Salt, Matthew Potts, John Turner.
