Matthew Wade Will Definitely Be In The Plans For The T20 World Cup: Aaron Finch

As Matthew Wade gears up to lead Australia in the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, Aaron Finch has said the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman still features prominently in Australia’s T20I plans.

With the series starting just three days after the conclusion of the World Cup, most of Australia’s first-choice players have been rested. Only seven players from the World Cup squad have been named in the T20I squad to face Team India. And Matthew Wade has been given the responsibility to lead the team despite the presence of senior players such as Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell.

The left-handed batsman, who will turn 36 next month, has been given a chance to prove his worth in the T20Is ahead of Josh Inglis who replaced Alex Carey in the playing eleven during the World Cup and played 10 of the 12 games.

Aaron Finch on Matthew Wade’s T20I future:

Josh Inglis was widely expected to be Australia’s main wicketkeeper after playing a key role in his team’s triumphant campaign in the World Cup. Before that, Inglis had played in all the three T20Is against South Africa in August and September. The Australian selectors, however, have made it pretty clear that they are still willing to give Matthew Wade a chance to prove himself ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

And Aaron Finch believes his former teammate features prominently in Australia’s plans because of his experience and knowledge of the shortest format of the game. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Finch highlighted Matthew Wade’s role in Australia’s triumphant campaign in the 2021 T20 World Cup, saying:

“I think Matthew Wade will definitely be in the plans for the T20 World Cup. He was brilliant in the T20 World Cup that Australia won in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He has been someone who has been around the leadership group, he has also captained a lot in T20 cricket. He has a fantastic cricket brain, so I think he will definitely be in Australia’s plans going forward.”

Matthew Wade has not played a T20I since the T20 World Cup last year and will be looking to hit the ground running in the upcoming series. The first match of the five-match series is scheduled to be played in Vizag on Thursday (November 23).
