As the IPL 2025 season nears its conclusion, the buzz around MS Dhoni’s future has once again reached a fever pitch. The iconic five-time IPL-winning captain is yet to make a definitive call on retirement, saying he’ll monitor his fitness over the next 6–8 months before arriving at a decision.
His comments came in the aftermath of Chennai Super Kings’ thrilling two-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. The victory snapped CSK’s losing streak, with Dewald Brevis leading the charge in the chase of 180 and Noor Ahmad impressing earlier with a four-wicket haul to restrict KKR to a below-par total.
During the post-match presentation, Dhoni was asked about the overwhelming support for him at Eden Gardens, where yellow shirts once again outnumbered the home crowd. In response, the CSK legend acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his retirement as a major reason for the fan turnout.

“That’s the kind of love and affection I’ve always received. I’m 43, I only play for two months a year. Fans don’t know when it could be my last game,” Dhoni said. “Once the IPL ends, I’ll have to spend the next 6–8 months working on my fitness to see if my body can handle the demands. Nothing has been decided yet.”
While CSK became the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention this season, they’ve used the opportunity to test new talent and groom future stars. Whether Dhoni chooses to extend his career into another season remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — the decision will rest solely with him.
