The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led team registered their first-ever ODI win against the defending champion England during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. The Afghanistan team secured a 69-run victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, October 15.

Reflecting on Afghanistan’s victory over England, Brendan Taylor emphasized that Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman‘s combined 30 overs will be the biggest threat to the opposition batters.

Mujeeb ur Rahman took three wickets, including Harry Brook and Joe Root. Rashid Khan had the best bowling performance, claiming three wickets. Rashid also cleaned up the tail. Mohammad Nabi contributed by taking two wickets for just 16 runs in his six overs.

After the victory, Mujeeb dedicated his Player of the Match award to the people impacted by the earthquake in Afghanistan’s Herat province. The 22-year-old also contributed with the bat while batting lower down the order, scoring 28 runs from 16 deliveries.
“This trophy is for the people back home who have been affected by the earthquake in Herat. This whole win is for them,” Mujeeb said in the post-match award presentation.
“Very proud moment to be here in the World Cup and beating the champions. It’s a great achievement for the whole team. We worked hard for this day. We beat such a big team. It was a wonderful performance from the bowlers and the batters.”
Earlier, Wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided a flying start, adding a 114-run partnership with Ibrahim Zadran. However, they lost wickets in quick succession, collapsing to 190/6. They recovered well to put up a total of 284 runs on the board.
