ODI World Cup 2023: Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi sets an unwanted record against New Zealand in Bengaluru

In the 35th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan‘s premier fast bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, endured a day to forget as New Zealand put up a formidable performance at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Despite his recent rise to the No. 1 spot in the ODI bowlers’ rankings, Shaheen was unable to leave his mark as New Zealand notched their highest-ever World Cup total of 401/6.

Shaheen Afridi’s unfortunate record

Shaheen, who was considered a key asset for Pakistan, was taken to the cleaners by the New Zealand batters, during his spell. Unfortunately, this spell led to an unwanted record for the 23-year-old pacer. He registered Pakistan’s most expensive bowling figures in the history of the World Cup.

Shaheen’s performance on this particular day stands as the sixth most expensive bowling display in the history of Pakistan’s One-Day International cricket. The unwanted record was sealed when Mitchell Santner dispatched him for a massive six in the final over of the New Zealand innings. Throughout the match, Shaheen faced a challenging day, conceding 11 fours and two sixes, marking one of the most testing outings of his cricket career.

Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf become Pakistan’s most expensive bowlers

Afridi concluded his 10-over spell with embarrassing figures of 10-0-90-0, marking a costly contribution as New Zealand piled on the runs. This performance saw him surpass Haris Rauf, who had set the dubious record earlier in the same match.

Rauf, who gave away 85 runs in his quota of 10 overs during the same game, found himself in second place on the list of Pakistan’s most expensive bowling performances in World Cup history. This record was previously held by Hasan Ali, who had leaked 84 runs in nine overs against India back in the 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Most runs conceded by a Pakistan bowler in a World Cup innings:

0/90 – Shaheen Afridi vs New Zealand, Bengaluru, 2023
1/85 – Haris Rauf vs New Zealand, Bengaluru, 2023
1/84 – Hasan Ali vs India, Manchester, 2019
