The 23-year-old Pakistan National Cricket Team top-order batsman Abdullah Shafique imitated the trademark celebration of India National Cricket Team star batsman Shubman Gill after hitting a marvelous ton on his World Cup debut.
Abdullah Shafique performed really well in the eighth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad on Tuesday, October 10.
Abdullah Shafique replaced Fakhar Zaman in the playing XI who has been going through a lean patch for a long period of time and made the most of the opportunity he got.
Chasing a mammoth 345-run target in the match, Pakistan were off to a poor start as Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam got out for low scores. However, Abdullah Shafique showed great temperament and built a terrific 176-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan to push the Lankan Team on the back foot.
He played attacking cricket and reached the three-figure mark on his World Cup debut by hitting a brilliant four. After completing the ton, he brought out the trademark celebration of Shubman Gill.

Overall, Abdullah Shafique scored 113 runs off 103 balls, with 10 fours and 3 sixes, and played a key role in Pakistan’s historic run-chase.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Babar Azam showered praise on the youngster Shafique for his outstanding performance. He elaborated:
“(On Shafique) Very happy with the way he’s playing. This is his first World Cup. His hunger to play, I saw him in the nets so I decided to play him.
“The way Rizwan and Abdullah built the partnership, they helped us. We believed and built partnerships.”
Riding on the centuries from Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets against Sri Lanka with 10 balls remaining. This was also the highest successful run-chase in the history of World Cups and now Pakistan have the winning momentum heading into the marquee clash against India National Cricket Team on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
