India head coach Rahul Dravid has credited captain Rohit Sharma for picking spinner Ravi Bishnoi to bowl the second super over against Afghanistan in the third IND vs AFG T20I at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday (January 19).
India’s fast bowlers had two opportunities to seal the win for the team but they failed on both occasions. Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar had 36 runs to defend in the game when Afghanistan were chasing an improbable total of 212 runs. However, the pacers failed to restrict the visitors.
Avesh conceded 17 runs while Mukesh gave away 18 as the scores were tied after 40 overs. In the super over, Mukesh once again failed to make an impact and gave away 16 runs before India scored 16 runs as well. In the second over, a six and a four from Rohit Sharma helped the hosts score 11 runs.
Rahul Dravid praises Rohit Sharma:
With only 11 runs to defend, India were clearly on the back foot. And while everyone was expecting Avesh to bowl the super over, captain Rohit Sharma decided to spring a big surprise by handing the ball to young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. The move paid off as the youngster conceded just 1 run and picked up 2 wickets to propel India to a thrilling win.
Speaking after the game, Rahul Dravid revealed that Rohit Sharma decided to go with Bishnoi and hailed the captain’s strategic acumen.
“I think Rohit went with his gut, he went with a call… I think he felt that the spinner had a better chance to take those two wickets. It was one of games when 11 wasn’t probably a huge score and where you know that if they batted those six balls, with the power they had, they probably would’ve got the 12 runs. You needed to take two wickets,” Dravid said.
“I think it was a great call from the skipper to go with the spinner. He could’ve gone for two sixes but I thought Bishnoi was brilliant, because he bowled two superb balls.
“He pulled the length back… if the length had gone slightly fuller, the way they were batting, on this small ground it would’ve gone for a six. I think it was really good gut call from Rohit to go for the wickets and be more positive rather than probably a safer option which people would’ve expected,” he added.
India won the three-match series 3-0 and will now prepare for the highly-anticipated five-match Test series against England. The series is scheduled to get underway on January 25 in Hyderabad.
