Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif has hit back at David Warner’s rebuttal to his own assertion that Team India were the “best in the tournament” despite their defeat to Australia in the final of the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2023.
Team India’s stunning run in the World Cup ended in a heartbreaking manner. After thoroughly dominating the league stage and registering a thumping win over New Zealand in the semifinals, India were widely expected to win the final against Australia. The Men in Blue entered the game as firm favorites while Australia were the underdogs.
However, the team from Down Under completely outplayed India and showed the world why they are the most successful side in the history of the competition. Australia thrashed the fancied hosts by 6 wickets to clinch a record-extending sixth World Cup title. Asked to bat first, India were bowled out for just 240 in 50 overs despite fifties from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.
In reply, Australia recovered from a poor start to chase down the total in 43 overs. They were reeling at 47 for 3 at one stage before a huge 192-run stand between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne put the game to bed. Head scored 137 off 120 balls with the help of 15 fours and 4 sixes while Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 58 off 110 balls.
Mohammad Kaif hits back at David Warner:
Following the defeat in the final, Mohammad Kaif took to X to hail Team India as the best team in the tournament. He also lauded Rohit Sharma, other players, and head coach Rahul Dravid for the brand of cricket the team played as he wrote:
“It hasn’t yet sunk in. A team so good, easily the best in the tournament, losing the the final. But everyone will remember the journey of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid and their boys. You did us proud, you will continue to do so with your entertaining and aggressive brand of cricket.”

Mohammad Kaif also hailed India as the best team while speaking on Star Sports, saying: “I can never accept that the best team has won the World Cup. The Indian team is the best team on paper.”
David Warner, however, was not at all impressed by Mohammad Kaif’s assertion. The Australia opener made sure to make things clear as he took to X to write: “I like MK, issue is it does not matter what’s on paper. At the end of the day you need to perform when it matters. That’s why they call it a final. That’s the day that counts and it can go either way, that’s sports. 2027 here we come”

Hours after Warner’s post, Mohammad Kaif, on Thursday (November 23), once again took to X to make his point clear and reiterated that India were the best team in the tournament despite the loss in the final, writing:
“Facts: It was Australia’s day in final, they won, they are World Cup winners. More facts: India comprehensively won 10 games, they lost 11th, they had the best bowlers and batters. They were the tournament’s best team. Both facts, on paper and on field. Relax Australia.”
