Rohit Sharma Broke The Rule With Controversial 2nd Super Over Participation? AB de Villiers Shares Views

Former South African skipper AB de Villiers opened up Rohit Sharma’s controversial super over retired out saga in the third T20I against Afghanistan. He said that the batter might have retired hurt and it was a mistake to show him out.

The third T20I between India and Afghanistan was nothing short of a nail-biter. The game moved to two super overs and it had surprising moments at every phase of the game. However, in the end, it was India who won the game and completed a 3-0 whitewash.

One of the defining moments that came in the game was during the end of the Super Over 1. With 2 runs needed off the last ball, Rohit Sharma, who was at the non-striker end, walked back to the pavilion and Rinku Singh came out to bat for the running purpose.

However, what caught the attention of many was after Rohit Sharma walked off, he came out to bat once again in the Super Over 2. But as per the rules of the game ‘batter who has been dismissed in one Super Over cannot bat in another.’

After Rohit Sharma walked off, the scorecard showed retired out and it raised a lot of speculations. Even umpires have no clue about it. The move paid off for India as the captain slammed runs in the second super over and helped the team win the game.

AB de Villiers talked about the super over and shared his opinion on Rohit Sharma’s decision. He said that it was a scoring mistake. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:

“Double Super Over unbelievable (smiles). You can’t bat again if you’re declared out in the first super over. I think maybe they will claim that he was retired hurt due to an injury and maybe it was a scoring mistake to show him out.”

Rinku is a fantastic player, a match-winner – AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers further lavished rich praise on the Indian batter Rinku Singh. He said that the batter’s innings was incredible. He hailed him as the match-winner and a fantastic player.

AB de Villiers pointed out Rinku Singh’s consistency and said that he always tries to win the game for the team. He elaborated:

“It was just incredible. It is what IPL is all about, and that’s what I am excited about SA20, the platform for youngsters and people we haven’t heard about.

“Rinku is a fantastic player, a match-winner, and it is good to see him become consistent as well. You need to be a consistent player who is always trying to win games for your team.”

The partnership between Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh was the game-changing for India. The duo added an unbeaten 190-run partnership when India was reeling at 22/4. While the skipper ended with an innings of 121, Rinku scored an unbeaten 69 runs. It powered team to a total of 212 runs, which at one moment seemed impossible. India clinched the series by a margin of 3-0.
