Rohit Sharma To Change His Role For T20 World Cup 2024? Aakash Chopra Drops Bombshell

Former India opener Aakash Chopra expects Rohit Sharma to adapt his ODI World Cup approach and maximize the powerplay in the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to Aakash, it will be very necessary to adopt an aggressive approach in the powerplay overs and maximize the flow of runs in the first six overs. Rohit Sharma and his partner would need to attack the ball and target 60 runs in the first six overs.

The upcoming edition of the T20 mega event will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States. The Men in Blue are drafted in Group A which comprises arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Co-hosts United States and Canada. They will face Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States in their first three group games in New York and then move to Lauderhill to take on Canada in their final game of the first stage.

Aakash Chopra noted that the Indian batters would need to utilize the powerplay to the fullest in the T20 World Cup. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, he said, “It will be extremely necessary to maximize the first six overs in West Indies and New York. As soon as the ball becomes slightly old and the field opens up, the ball will not come nicely onto the bat, and run-scoring will become slightly difficult.”

The cricketer-turned-commentator added that Rohit Sharma and potentially Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside him will have to make the most against the new ball, “Then you will need power hitters in the end because the pitches will be like that. If you see from that perspective, you need to capitalize on the first six overs, and that’s where Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will try their best to do that.”

Rohit Sharma Returns To T20Is After 14 Months

Aakash Chopra reckons that India needs to score between 45 and 55 runs in the powerplay and it would be better to reach the 60-run mark. Rohit Sharma played the role of aggressor in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and provided the team with excellent starts in the powerplay. He should play the same role in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and provide the team with the kind of starts that could be converted into massive totals.

Rohit Sharma returned to the T20 circuit for India during the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan where he was asked to lead the side. Before this, he last played a T20I in 2022 when India faced a crushing defeat against England in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Rohit’s return to the format has not been auspicious as he recorded consecutive ducks in the series and now only has a third T20I to open his account in the series.

India will face Afghanistan in the third T20I of the series on Wednesday, January 17 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Men in Blue have already won the series taking an unassailable lead of 2-0 and now they are looking for a whitewash. This is the last T20 series for Team India before the T20 World Cup. However, the players will get enough match practice during the IPL.
