Shane Bond Ends Association With Mumbai Indians Franchise After Almost A Decade

Mumbai Indians, on Wednesday (October 18), announced that they have parted ways with Shane Bond ahead of the next season of the Indian Premier League. The announcement has brought an end to the almost decade-long association between the franchise and the former New Zealand fast bowler.

One of the fastest and best bowlers of his generation, Shane Bond joined the Mumbai Indians franchise in 2015 as a bowling coach. Before that, he had served as New Zealand’s bowling coach and stepped down from the post after helping his country qualify for its first-ever World Cup final. He was widely credited for making New Zealand’s pace attack one of the best in the world.

Shane Bond made an instant impact on the IPL too. During his tenure as a bowling coach, Mumbai Indians won the title four times – 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Later, the Mumbai Indians franchise also appointed him as the head coach of the MI Emirates in the ILT20, which started in January this year. He has also parted ways with the MI Emirates team as well.

“Mumbai Indians announce that Shane Bond’s successful tenure that began in 2015 has ended after a nine-year stint with the team, bringing down the curtain on an illustrious career that included 4 IPL trophies as bowling coach for Mumbai Indians, and Head Coach of MI Emirates in the inaugural season in ILT20,” the franchise stated in a media release on Wednesday.

Shane Bond thanks the franchise and fans:

Shane Bond thanked the Mumbai Indians owners for giving him the opportunity to work for the franchise for almost a decade. Wishing the franchise the best, he said:

“I would like to thank the Ambani family for the opportunity to be part of MI One Family for the last nine seasons. It has been an incredible experience with so many great memories on and off the field. I have been lucky enough to work with and have strong relationships with so many great people, both players and staff. I will miss them all and wish them all the best for the future. Finally thanks to the MI Paltan for their support as well.”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have roped in their former fast bowler Lasith Malinga as their next bowling coach.
