Shubman Gill Hospitalised After Platelet Count Falls, Set To Miss Pakistan Clash

Shubman Gill is likely to miss the high-voltage clash against Pakistan in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup as he is still far from a full recovery from dengue. The right-handed batsman missed India’s World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday (October 8) and has already been ruled out of the upcoming clash against Afghanistan in Delhi.

A recent media report suggested that Shubman Gill was recovering well and could be in contention to play against Pakistan on Saturday (October 14). However, his participation in the India vs Pakistan game is highly doubtful now as he has been hospitalised in Chennai, as per reports.

The BCCI, on Monday (October 9), released a statement saying that the 24-year-old did not travel with the team to Delhi, the venue for India’s clash against Afghanistan. However, the BCCI has not revealed the reason behind the same. The reason is that Shubman Gill has been hospitalised in Chennai following a dip in his platelet count and is currently being treated in Kaveri Hospital.

According to a report from Cricbuzz, the India star’s low platelet count has raised concerns. As a result, he has been advised for treatment and not to undertake any air travel. BCCI’s own physician, Dr. Rizwan Khan, is currently attending Shubman Gill in Chennai. Last week, he travelled to Chennai with the rest of the team but has not been with the team since October 4.

Shubman Gill set to miss Pakistan clash:

Even if Shubman Gill recovers and the platelet count improves before the match against Pakistan, it looks highly impossible that he would be match fit. A person is very weak after recovering from dengue, so playing an international game right away will be difficult. At best, he could join the team in Ahmedabad before the game but is unlikely to play in it.

The Indian team management is also unlikely to take any risk with the youngster at the beginning of the World Cup. With Shubman Gill sidelined, Ishan Kishan is set to continue as an opener. The southpaw failed to do well against Australia and was out for a golden duck. He would be desperate to make amends against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11).
