Year 2024 has started and cricket fans around the globe are excited for ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be played in June this year. ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in the West Indies and the United States of America.
Along with Sri Lanka, a total of 20 teams are part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Hence, this is the first time that such a large number of teams will battle in the T20 World Cup. These 20 teams are grouped into 4 different groups- A, B, C, and D of five teams each.
Sri Lanka is part of Group D. Other four members of the pool are Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, and South Africa. Sri Lanka will clash with South Africa in their opening game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 3, which is their most challenging clash in the group stage.

Facing each other team once, Sri Lanka will wrestle with the Netherlands in their final group stage encounter on June 16. The top two teams from the group will enter the Super 8 round later. Below is Sri Lanka’s schedule for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The Asian team did not have an impressive show in ODI World Cup 2023 two months ago. Sri Lanka finished in the 9th spot in the points table after facing defeats in 7 games out of 9. They also lost matches to Asian members Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Wanindu Hasarange is Sri Lanka’s New T20I Captain
Due to the World Cup debacle, the management has changed the T20I skipper. Wanindu Hasaranga is the new T20I skipper for Sri Lanka. Earlier, Dasun Shanaka led the team in both limited-overs formats.
Hence, Hasaranga might also lead the side in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Sri Lanka owns one T20I World Cup title. They won the trophy in the 2014 edition after crushing India in the final. However, in the last few editions, Sri Lanka had dismal shows.
Sri Lanka lost 3 games in the group stage in the previous edition in 2022, failing to reach the semi-finals. In the 2021 tournament too, the Asian giants failed to reach semis once again after losing 3 encounters out of 5.
Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Sri Lanka will lock horns with Zimbabwe in a T20I and ODI series in January. They are yet to finalize more international campaigns ahead of the World Cup.
