In the second match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies secured a thrilling victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 5 wickets at Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Sese Bau powers PNG to a respectable total

PNG struggled to build momentum after losing early wickets. Sese Bau anchored the innings with a well-crafted 50 off 43 balls, hitting 6 fours and 1 six. Captain Assad Vala contributed 21 runs off 22 balls, and Kiplin Doriga added a brisk 27 off 18 balls. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to make significant contributions, resulting in a modest total of 136 for 8.

For the co-hosts, Andre Russell (3 overs, 2 wickets, 19 runs conceded), Alzarri Joseph (4 overs, 2 wickets, 34 runs conceded) bagged two wickets each while Akeal Hosein (3 overs, 1 wicket, 9 runs conceded) picked up one scalp.

Roston Chase holds nerves in the tricky chase

Chasing 137, West Indies got off to a rocky start with the early dismissal of Johnson Charles for a duck. However, Brandon King steadied the innings with a solid 34 off 29 balls. Nicholas Pooran and Roston Chase provided crucial middle-order contributions, with Chase top-scoring with 42 off 27 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. Despite a few hiccups, Andre Russell‘s quickfire 15 off 9 balls ensured West Indies reached the target with an over to spare.

A fine knock from Roston Chase with 42* and WI win by 5 wickets with 1 over to spare

Good effort from PNG though#T20WordCup

Flatter the pitch, wider the gap between two sides.
Tough pitch to bat will bring teams closer to each other. WI has amazing batting depth and a very decent bowling unit…but PNG pushed them properly.
Hope today’s pitch was just an aberration … #T20WorldCup

Roston Chase has started to understand his limited-overs game much better. A fine player of spin too.
