UAE and Afghanistan go head to head in a three-match T20I series in Sharjah. All three matches will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah. Afghanistan have a real chance to dominate UAE in this short series.
Afghanistan will be led by Hasmatullah Shahidi while Muhammad Waseem is expected to lead the UAE. The Afghans are a far more experienced side than their fellow Asian side. the UAE not getting games against bigger teams and tougher opponents is one of the reasons why their level of cricket has not improved over the years.
Dubai recently hosted the IPL 2024 auction which was a major statement from the UAE Cricket Board as to the entire cricketing world as to how UAE is becoming a powerhouse to hosting major tournaments. The country has also hosted IPL editions and the T20 World Cup 2021 which was another example of the game’s expanse in that part of the world.
The UAE played against New Zealand earlier this year and won the second T20I. They then lost to Afghanistan, 2-1, lost the Napal tri-Nation series, and failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024. Teams like Canada, Oman, PNG, and Uganda also qualified for the tournament but UAE failed. The tournament will be played in the US and the West Indies.
Afghanistan are currently ranked 10th in the ICC T20I rankings and UAE 17th. The Afghans defeated UAE earlier this year defeated Pakistan 2-1 and lost to Bangladesh. They secured their qualification in the T20 World Cup 2024 and made it to the final of the Asian games in China.
Heading into this series, the Afghanistan Cricket Board denied giving NOCs to three of their players namely, Naveen-ul Haq, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Fazalhaq Farooqi. The board has denied them giving NOCs for the next two years as the cricketers. As per reports, the cricketers were not interested in signing the central contracts and ‘prioritized their interests over playing for Afghanistan, which is regarded as a national responsibility.’

While it was decided that the players will no longer be eligible to obtain NOCs for two years, all the current NOCs shall be revoked immediately. This means that IPL franchises Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants will be denied the services of the Afghan cricketers. Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad had decided to retain Naveen and Farooqi respectively, whereas Kolkata Knight Riders roped in spinner Mujeeb in the auction last week.
