India National Cricket Team pacer Mohammed Shami was at his sensational best in the first semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand National Cricket Team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15.
Shami single-handedly destroyed the strong Kiwi batting unit and won the match for India. The performance pulled off by Mohammed Shami will go down in the history books as it helped India secure a spot in the final of the marquee tournament.
Shami registered exceptional figures of 9.5-0-57-7 against the Black Caps and became the fastest-ever bowler to bag 50 wickets in ODI World Cups. This was also the best bowling figures for India in the history of ODI cricket.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami dismissed the centurion Daryl Mitchell on the second ball of the 46th over to complete his third fifer in the ongoing edition of the World Cup.
With the wicket of Mitchell, he also secured the win for India and was delighted to achieve the milestone. Mohammed Shami once again pulled off a hilarious ‘ball on the head’ celebration for the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.

I was waiting for my turn, I wasn’t playing much white ball cricket – Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami was awarded Player of the Match and speaking after the game, he said that he was eagerly waiting for his opportunity to deliver for India. He said:
“I was waiting for my turn. I wasn’t playing much white ball cricket. I had in mind, that we talk about a lot of things like yorkers and slower balls. I tried to take wickets with the new ball. I try to take as many as I can with the new ball.”
Even though Mohammed Shami pulled off a historic performance, all was not well for him on the field as he dropped a catch of Kane Williamson at a crucial moment in the game. Talking about that, Mohammed Shami said that he felt really bad about the dropped chance. He elaborated:
“I dropped the catch of Kane. I felt bad. I tried to take pace off. They were playing their shots. So, I took a chance. The wicket was good. There was the fear of dew. The grass was cut off nicely. The runs were enough. Had dew come in, things could have been bad. The slower balls might not have worked. I feel amazing. This is a huge platform. We lost in the semis in the 2015 and the 2019 WC. Looking to cash in with the chance I have been given. We don’t know when all of us will get a chance like this again.”
