Will Mohammed Shami Play T20 World Cup 2024? Pacer Reveals Career Ambition After World Cup 2023 Debacle

India’s Right arm pacer Mohammed Shami in the latest interview, confirmed his availability and desire to feature in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at USA and West Indies later in June. Shami is yet to play a competitive match for India since November with the Cricket World Cup Final at Ahmedabad being his last appearance.

He suffered an ankle injury right after the CWC final loss against Australia on November 19th and missed all of India’s subsequent matches at home and away. Mohammed Shami did not feature in the 5-match T20I series against the Aussies post-World Cup and also missed India’s entire month-long tour of South Africa.

He was deemed unfit by the BCCI and was denied approval to join the squad for the 3 T20Is-ODIs and 2 Tests. His absence was majorly felt during the red ball phase, especially in the 1st Test. India had lost the Centurion Test by an innings and 32 runs before staging a splendid comeback to draw the series in the 2nd Test at Newlands.

The surface in both the venues would have suited Mohammed Shami but regardless, the Indian team was happy with the results they received in South Africa. There is a lot of talk going around the return of Shami but the question of his selection in India’s T20 World Cup squad is gaining an equal amount of traction.

Shami’s return to the Indian team is set to happen through the 5-match Test series against England on home soil. The 1st Test will take place on 25th January at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium before the series heads to Vishakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamshala.

He is most likely to return after the 2nd Test as he is currently recovering well from his ankle injury at the NCA in Bengaluru.

“My rehabilitation is well on track and the medical experts at NCA are happy with my progress. There is slight stiffness in my ankle but that’s fine. I have started my training sessions and I believe I will be able to make a comeback in the England series.” – Shami said.

“I Don’t Understand Whether I Am In The Scene Or Not”, Mohammed Shami On His T20 WC Chances

While speaking about his chances of making it to the Indian side for the 20-team T20 World Cup, which is set to start on June 1, Mohammed Shami confirmed his availability to the selectors. Shami who finished CWC 2023 as the highest wicket-taker, claimed that he is himself confused about whether he is in the selector’s plans or not for the shortest format but has a glimmer of hope in his heart to play if he gets the chance.

“Whenever it comes to T20s, many time I don’t understand that whether I am in scene or not. But what I feel is that you have IPL before the T20 World Cup and that is the best opportunity to bring in momentum and if management will ask me to play, I’ll be available.” – Mohammed Shami concluded.
