Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has picked the favorites for the upcoming India vs Pakistan match in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The arch-rivals are set to lock horns against each other on Saturday (October 14) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Both teams are unbeaten in the tournament so far. Pakistan began their campaign with a fine 81-run win over the Netherlands in Hyderabad. In their second game, the Men in Green chased down a record total of 345 runs against Sri Lanka and won the game by six wickets.
India on the other hand, have defeated Australia and Afghanistan so far. Against Australia, they were reeling at 2 for 3 while chasing 200 runs before going on to win the game by six wickets. In their second game, a blazing century from captain Rohit Sharma led India to a thumping 8-wicket win over Afghanistan as they chased down 273 runs in just 35 overs.

As India and Pakistan gear up for the game, Ricky Ponting has picked the hosts as the favorites to win the upcoming game. Hailing the rivalry as one of the great rivalries in sports, the Australia legend rued the lack of India-Pakistan games. India and Pakistan only play against each other in ICC competitions and the Asia Cup after the BCCI suspended all bilateral ties with them.
“India-Pakistan is probably one of the great rivalries in world sport. And to be honest as a cricket fan, we probably don’t get to see it enough. I think we’d all like to see India Pakistan play more. They’ve just done it recently with the Asia Cup.
“I think they (India) will start favourite in the game again. The home conditions, probably slightly better balanced side than what Pakistan have got at the moment,” Ricky Ponting told ICC.
At the same time, he fired a timely warning to Team India. Ricky Ponting stated that while the home side will start as favorites, Pakistan have the required firepower to spring a surprise.
“But as we know on their day, Pakistan can play some very, very good cricket. If Rizwan, Babar and those guys can have a day out, and then with Afridi and Shadab Khan, they are a very dangerous team. Over the last couple of years, they have probably been one of the best performed white-ball teams in the world whether it’s T20 or one-dayers,” said Ricky Ponting.
