Rishabh Pant could be named India’s vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, according to reports from Cricbuzz. This comes on the back of Pant’s impressive leadership and performance for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing IPL 2024.
Rishabh Pant as Rohit Sharma’s deputy for T20 World Cup 2024?
The BCCI selectors are scheduled to meet on May 1st for the T20 World Cup squad selection. Reports suggest they might consider replacing Hardik Pandya with Pant as Rohit Sharma‘s deputy. Pant previously held the role before sustaining an injury.
While Hardik remains a contender for the vice-captaincy, his underwhelming performance as captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2024 seems to be working against him. Critics have pointed out questionable decisions made by Pandya during the tournament.
Pandya served as India’s vice-captain in the 2023 ODI World Cup and was expected to reprise the role for the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, Pant’s strong leadership qualities could see him take over the position.
Cricbuzz also suggests that Pant will be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter for the T20 World Cup. While there were questions regarding Hardik’s place in the squad initially, his recent bowling form in the IPL has strengthened his case for selection.
