ENG vs SA: Jofra Archer To Replace Reece Topley In England’s World Cup Squad? Matthew Mott Answers

England National Cricket Team white-ball head coach Matthew Mott has revealed whether Jofra Archer will replace injured Reece Topley in the 15-man squad of the Three Lions for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Reece Topley, who is one of the most unfortunate cricketers of all time, is on the verge of missing yet another marquee tournament due to an injury.

The left-arm quick has bowled brilliantly in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and looked like England’s most penetrative bowler. However, he faced two injury scares during the competition with the most recent one coming at the Wankhede Stadium against South Africa on Saturday, October 21.

He tried to stop a drive back down the ground from Rassie van der Dussen and the ball flicked the tip of his left middle finger to force him to leave the field injured. Although he was able to return and bowl in the match, his fingers were heavily taped.

Speaking to Sky Sports after England’s embarrassing loss to the Proteas, Mott revealed that the pacer has likely broken his finger.

“I thought Reece Topley going back out to bowl with a broken finger showed great spirit,” Mott told Sky Sports at the end of the contest. “We’re still waiting on that, but it’s very much looking like it’s a crack. Certainly, that’s the early diagnosis, but we’ll find out properly with X rays.”

Jofra Archer is actually not going to be considered for selection – Matthew Mott

Jofra Archer is currently in India as a part of England’s traveling reserve for the ICC World Cup 2023 and he is undergoing rehabilitation from a long-term elbow problem.

Archer’s inclusion in the squad should have been straightforward after Topley got ruled out but this will not be the case as Matthew Mott has revealed that the right-arm pacer will not be considered for selection. He said:

“Jof is actually not going to be considered for selection. He’s come out, he’s reported to the medical staff, but he’s not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign.”

Talking about England’s 229-run loss, Matthew Mott said they had a really hard night in Mumbai.

“I can’t sugarcoat that, it was a hard night for us. I think we come in with really good intentions in this game,” he said. “It was a fantastic cricket wicket. We looked at the ground stats, it said it was a good chasing ground. On reflection, I thought the heat was probably more than we bargained for. It certainly looked a little bit like a warzone there at times, particularly after Topley went off.”
