It was a doubleheader day in the ICC World Cup 2023. The first game took place between England and Bangladesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Whereas Match 8 saw Pakistan taking on Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The first match belonged to England as they batted and bowled magnificently to outclass Bangladesh. Asked to bat first, they batted in their usual aggressive way with Jonny Bairstow (52) and Dawid Malan (140) giving a perfect start to the team.

Joe Root (82) played a vital hand whereas handy contributions from Jos Buttler (15), Harry Brook (20) and others powered England to a gigantic total of 364 runs. For Bangladesh, Mahedi Hasan picked four wickets whereas Shoriful Islam bagged three scalps.

England never let Bangladesh get settled with the bat as Reece Topley picked wickets upfront and put them under pressure. They lost four wickets for just 49. Litton Das (76) and Mushfiqur Rahim (51) tried to bail the team out of trouble with their vital half-centuries.

But they couldn’t convert the start they got as England bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals and bundled them on just 227 runs and won the game by 137 runs.

In the second game, Hyderabad saw a festival of runs. Sri Lanka, who opted to bat first, had a great outing with the bat as Pathum Nissanka (51),  Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) batted magnificently and put Pakistan bowlers under great pressure.

Their rollicking batting performance along with vital contributions from Dhananjaya de Silva (25), Dasun Shanaka (12), and Dunith Wellalage (10) powered Sri Lanka to a total of 344 runs. For Pakistan, Hasan Ali was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged four wickets.

Pakistan had a shaky start with the bat as they lost Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Babar Azam (10). But after that, it was all about Abdullah Shafique (113) and Mohammad Rizwan (131). The duo added a 176-run partnership in the pressure situation and took the game away from the opposition.

After the wicket of Abdhulla Shafique, Saud Shakeel (31) played a handy knock as well. Mohammad Rizwan remained unbeaten on 131 runs and made sure that he took his side home and helped them win their second match of the tournament.
