Rahmanullah Gurbaz, on Sunday (October 15), starred with the bat as Afghanistan beat reigning world champions England in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 to register arguably the greatest win in their history. Riding on the opening batter’s quickfire knock, Afghanistan stunned England by 69 runs to register their first win in the tournament.
After England won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first, Rahmanullah Gurbaz came out all guns blazing. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed 80 runs off just 57 balls before his promising knock came to an end due to a run-out. His knock was studded 8 fours and 4 brilliant sixes. He also added 114 runs with Ibrahim Zadran for the first wicket.
Ikram Alikhil scored a fifty too to help Afghanistan finish with a challenging total of 284 runs. In reply, England were all out for 215 runs inside 41 overs. Barring Harry Brook who scored 66, no other England batter could provide any resistance.
The defending champions kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 215. For Afghanistan, their star spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman made the difference with the ball. Both of them picked up three wickets each while veteran Mohammad Nabi accounted for two scalps.

After his brilliant knock against England, Rahmanullah Gurbaz heaped praise on India superstar Virat Kohli and revealed the help he has received from him. The Afghan star hailed Kohli as an inspiration and revealed that the former India skipper has helped him to learn about game planning.
“Kohli is an Inspiration for every young player in the world, players look up to him & he helped me a lot about the game plan, how to build an innings & how to score big runs,” he told Star Sports.
Afghanistan’s next game is against New Zealand on Wednesday (October 18). The match will be played in the spinner-friendly conditions of Chennai and Afghanistan will be fancying their chances of causing another upset.
