PAK vs AFG: Mohammad Amir Questions Babar Azam’s Captaincy Amid Pakistan’s Poor Performance In World Cup 2023

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir criticized Babar Azam’s captaincy, emphasizing a perceived lack of improvement. Mohammad Amir pointed out that Babar Azam has not progressed as a leader despite leading the Pakistan cricket team for four years.

The Men in Green suffered a disappointing 8-wicket loss to Afghanistan in their fifth World Cup match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, October 23. The team must win all remaining matches to keep their chances alive in the ongoing tournament.

I Don’t See Any Betterment – Mohammad Amir

In an interview on a local TV channel, Mohammad Amir emphasized that there has been minimal progress in Babar Azam‘s leadership during his tenure as captain.

“Babar Azam has been captain of Pakistan’s team for four years now but I don’t see any betterment or improvement in his captaincy today,” said Mohammad Amir.

Babar Azam was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan T20I team in October 2019. He led the team to the semifinals of the 2021 T20 World Cup, where they faced defeat against Australia. They finished as runners-up in last year’s World Cup in the shorter format.

We’ll Try Our Best In The Next Match – Babar Azam

Speaking after the Pakistan-Afghanistan match, Babar Azam stated that their bowling and fielding were not up to par, especially in the middle overs. Azam acknowledged that Pakistan needed to improve in the upcoming matches.

“This hurts us. We had a good total. In the bowling, we weren’t up to the mark as we are not taking wickets in the middle overs. If you are not good in even one department, then you’ll lose the game. We didn’t stop boundaries and gave away runs, that cost us,” Babar Azam said.

“We started well in bowling, in the middle overs, we needed wickets but we couldn’t take any. All credit to Afghanistan the way they played in all three departments. That’s why they won. We are not playing good cricket in bowling and fielding. We’ll try our best in the next match. We didn’t hit the lengths in the middle overs, especially our spinners,” Babar Azam added.

The Pakistan cricket team will take on the Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in their next match at the same venue on Friday, October 27.
